10th September 2009 - The story so far

Thursday 03rd September 2009
Fetched up at Joan’s for the first read through last night. We were joined by some talented new members and met some who were returning after taking a break from the rigours of the panto experience. I missed this event last year (my first year) and thoroughly enjoyed hearing the superb script ‘come to life’.

Auditions yesterday afternoon. Those interested in principal parts were allowed to audition for up to three parts in front of the five venerable members of the auditioning committee. Great for the banter lounging around at auntie Joan’s before and cursed with a dry mouth after the ordeal.(but not so scary really!)

Last night was the first gathering of the group for what will be our regular Wednesday rehearsals. Having found out who will be playing the principal characters and making the necessary introductions, the session was spent auditioning for the dancers, discussing the minor character roles throughout the story and introducing us to the song list. No auntie Joan to play for us, just a dodgy cassette recording of some of the musical score. An ‘interesting’ mix of old and more modern songs which include lyrics from an age, when to be described as being ‘a bit more gay’ meant something completely different, to someone with the ability to make the girls’ ‘cherry pop’ and ‘panties drop’! A particular favorite with our septuagenarian members, I believe. Every couple of weeks I’ll try to keep you abreast of the ‘goings on’ in rehearsals. All I’ll say this week is book early to avoid disappointment, Dick is going to be an absolute riot!
